The sacral chakra is the second of the seven chakras in the chakra system and is often referred to as “the seat of creativity”. The sacral chakra is responsible for feelings of pleasure, physical love, and sexuality. It regulates emotions, desires and passions. Located just below the navel, it is connected to the element of water, symbolizing the fluid nature of life. The sacral chakra is orange in colour and is represented by a six-petaled lotus. A healthy sacral chakra allows for creative inspiration and shows up as a sense of vibrancy and vitality in one’s life.
Sacral Chakra and Creativity
The Sacral Chakra is a major creative center and affects our ability to be inspired.
Sacral Chakra and the Physical Body
The sacral chakra is affected by thoughts and feelings you have about physical pleasure and your body. This includes food, drink, sex, addictions, cravings, exercise, sleep, body image, and overall health.
The sense of taste is associated with the sacral chakra. In the yogic tradition, two other senses correlate to the swadhisthana—jnanendriyas, the senses of knowledge, and karmendriyas, the sense of action. Jnanendriyas are also associated with the tongue, just as karmendriyas are associated with the sexual organs. Each connects back to this region’s overarching energy of sexual function or desire and the connection to food. Should you wish to combat an unhealthy relationship with food or an inability to control your sexual desires, you can perform pranic exercises to move the energy through and out of this area intentionally.
Parts of the body associated with the sacral chakra include the sexual and reproductive organs, the lumbar and pelvic region, and the elimination systems. Thus, the bladder, prostate, ovaries, testes, uterus, intestinal tract, spleen, gallbladder, sacrum, hips and kidneys are all affected by this region’s energetic work.
It is no surprise that the sacral chakra affects sexual potency and stamina. An unbalanced sacral chakra can manifest as infertility, impotence, problems with pregnancy, fetal development, gynecological problems (including problems with the menstrual cycle, PMS, cramps), pelvic disorders, chronic lower back pain, sciatica, liver or intestinal dysfunction, GI disorders (IBS, SIBO, Crohn’s colitis, candida overgrowth, and gut microbiome imbalances), and urinary tract issues and infections. A healthy sacral chakra can strengthen the immune system and help with cleansing and detoxing of the the body. Allergies, arthritis, and rheumatism are all associated with the sacral chakra. (2)
Sacral Chakra’s Connection to Emotions and Relationships
The Sacral Chakra governs how emotions are processed and expressed. A robust sacral chakra will be expressed through emotional maturity, intelligence, and one’s ability to maintain emotional boundaries with others. (5) A person with a balanced second chakra will be able to nurture healthy connections with other people and have a desire to be social. They are also able to express their sexuality in a positive and healthyh way. When the sacral chakra is balanced, relationships are harmonious, you are able to maintain healthy boundaries with others, and you are comfortable in your sexuality and capable of achieving real intimacy with others.
Sacral Chakra Location
The sacral chakra is located at the center of the lower abdomen and above the pubic bone, approximately 2 inches below the navel (belly button) in an area called the Hara or Tan Dien (5).
Sacral Chakra and Element of Water
The sacral chakra drives your ability to adapt to the changes of the world around you. A healthy sacral chakra is demonstrated by your ability to move with the ebbs and flows of life, create material abundance, and experience pleasure through the physical senses. A clear and flowing sacral chakra is shown in your ability to use creative energy to make and maintain healthy physical relationships.
Sacral Chakra and Orange Foods
This six-petaled lotus boasts the color orange. When you embrace this color by eating foods such as pumpkins, oranges, and carrots, you support your body in awakening this location’s energy. The location of this chakra is also associated with Rakini, the goddess of the vegetable kingdom. Due to this connection, the swadhisthana chakra is closely linked to the vegetable world. Eating predominantly fruits and vegetables aids the body throughout one’s Kundalini awakening.
The yantra (geometric shape) or symbol for the sacral chakra is an orange-colored six-petaled lotus with a crescent moon inside.
What are Signs of a Blocked Sacral Chakra?
If the sacral is blocked, energy moves slowly or doesn’t move at all, resulting in a lack of personal power and stamina.
A blocked sacral chakra can also cause a person to isolate, feel lonely, jealous, and/or sad. There may be guilt or shame, especially around sexuality. Relationships may feel unstable or unbalanced and emotional hooks or soul ties can be problematic, especially those from previous sexual encounters.
There can be problems with the sexual organs as well as blocked creativity. The person may be unable to allow the flow of abundance and success in their life. Self-sabotage, self-blame and self-criticism are all common.
Common Physical Conditions:
Lethargy
Chronic fatigue syndrome (myalgic encephalitis)
Eating disorders
Sexual impotency
Chronic lower back pain
Sciatica
Menstrual cycle dysfunction
Intestinal disorders
Kidney disease
Urinary tract infections
Gallbladder disorders
What are the Signs of an Overactive Sacral Chakra?
Sexual Compulsions: unconsciously giving away or misusing sexual energy while lacking emotional connections. They may seek out physical pleasure as a distraction from their inability to be intimate with others.
Other Addictive Behaviours: overeating, drug abuse, and alcoholism.
Problems Relating: jealous or possessive behaviour, being overly social and in constant need of companionship, unable to be alone. Loyalty issues.
Creative Blocks: inability to focus on one thing at a time, finish projects, or to master any form of discipline.
Emotional Dysregulation: avoid deeper feelings, regular and possibly intense bouts of anxiety, hyperactivity, aggression, self-indulgence
Physical Problems: kidney, bladder, digestive, or reproductive inflammatory issues
What are the Signs of an Underactive Sacral Chakra?
Sexually Shutdown: frigidity, stiffness, low sex drive. Depression and internalized shame result in lack of libido and no desire to connect with others. Sexual trauma is often the cause and results in numbness and an inability to feel joy.
Problems Relating: prone to isolation, reluctant to engage in social interaction.
Emotional Problems: lacking sensitivity, pleasure, or passion. Depression, morose feeling.
Physical Problems: impotence, infertility, arthritis, urinary problems, sexual dysfunction, pelvic inflammation and disease, kidney or bladder stones, slow or inefficient digestion, hormonal imbalances, chronic lower back pain.

Sacral Chakra Meditation
Take long, deep breaths and, using your mind’s eye, visualize chakra balancing energy spinning at the center of your pelvis. “See” the color orange spinning just below your navel. Allow this energy to flow freely with joy and respect for your gift of creation. Recite the following:
My sacral chakra is my second energy center and it functions to stimulate my child-like emotions and adventure.
This is the source of my creativity and inspiration.
My sexual desire and passion are born here.
